Octet Comparator and Axial Viewer - The Twin Dilemna!

From Jim:

Dear Sirs,

I tried the phosphate in water test kit, code 7416-01.

Do you have detailed instructions for the Octet Comparator/Axial Reader as referred to in the test kit instructions from the internet? Can I get it on the web?

In general the instructions from the kit are different than the one from the internet. I am trying to understand the role of the 2 sample test tubes which don't have the reagents added. Also the ampoule with distilled water.

Dear Jim,

Thank you for your inquiry. We have updated the detailed instructions for the axial reader on our website, at www.lamotte.com

The concept of the axial reader is deceptively simple. Knowing the theory of the design and a little practice will help you become more comfortable with its use.

The axial reader is designed to differentiate fine degrees of color. With the axial reader, instead of looking directly through the test tube, the color from the entire length of the test tube is reflected by the mirror into the "windows" of the comparator.

For a 10 ml sample, this means that the colors are intensified 10 times. The purpose of the additional tubes of sample water and the distilled water ampoule are to standardize all the comparator color "windows" uniformly so that you're comparing apples to apples.

When using the axial reader, it is extremely important to hold the comparator so that the light shines through the LENGTH of the test tubes. Depending on your light source, this may involve holding the comparator at an angle.

I find that holding the comparator at waist or chest level is easier than the natural tendency to hold it above your head. When you find the correct angle, the colors will be bright and clear. To view the top row of color "windows", the top of the axial reader is flush with the top of the comparator. To view the color "windows" on the bottom row, the bottom of the axial reader should be flush with the bottom of the comparator.

Test tubes and ampoules are placed on the right side or left side of the comparator, depending on which "windows" you are viewing. Once you have the correct angle, match the color in the CENTER of the reacted tube to the color "windows". Because the test tubes are round, the color at the edge of the tube is darker.
