Water Quality

By Deana R.

The best thing we did in science was the water quality. This is my second time doing this because I did it in the 3rd grade and in the 7th grade. This time it was different because I was the 7th grader! I was the one teaching the 3rd grader like the high schooler taught me when I was in the 3rd grade. Now they have the 7th graders doing it with the 3rd graders.

It was fun going on the field trip again. It brought back memories like when I got stuck in the mud and Mr. Hall helped me out. This year I didn’t get stuck in the mud because I learned my lesson. We had two groups and one group took walks when the other half was doing tests, then we switched. We did leaf rubbings and drew pictures of the trees, and what was around us.

This year I was the 7th grader so I got to teach to 3rd grader. Now I know what the high schoolers felt when they taught us. My buddy was great. He listened to me and I knew him so it made it better. We taught them about what we were going to do and went through the tests with them.

The tests we did were p.H., nitrates, and phosphates, temp., dissolved oxygen, fecal coliform, and turbidity. It was fun doing these again. Some of the tests I remembered how to do and I knew how important each one was. On the field trips we also looked for macros. Macroinvertebrates are big bugs that have no back bone. They live in the water. They tell us if the water is good or bad. This year they told us that the water at Mill Creek is good.

This year we also raised salmon. It was fun seeing the samon growing up. Every day I would go and see them and I would take the p.h. and see what the temp. was, then write it down on the paper that Mrs. Schaaf would see.

I hope that you like this as much as I did. I was planning to not pass the 7th grade so I could do it again but I won’t! I will go on to the 8th grade and remember what I did. Well, I better get to class so I can pass the 7th grade. Bye!
